History:
The West Brickmont Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1951 when a fire destroyed a house and the two people inside perished. On that day it was decided that a formal fire department would be formed. A pickup truck was donated by a community member and a pump, water tank, lights and siren were installed in it. A small garage was built in the center of town and the "Fire Engine" was parked there. This truck is currently being restored by members of the department to be used for parades and other public functions.
The department has grown far from that. Reorganized in 1995, the West Brickmont Fire Protection District provides fire prevention, fire suppression, vehicle rescue and extrication, first responder medical, water rescue, search and rescue, basic haz-mat, and technical rescue capibilities to an area of 93 square miles.
The West Brickmont Rescue Squad is a separate department, but the two work hand-in-hand on most calls. Many Rescue Squad members are also members of the Fire Department and visa-versa. The Rescue Squad provides first responder medical, basic and advanced life support EMS, vehicle extrication, technical rescue, water rescue, and search and rescue. They cover West Brickmont's fire district, part of Cheyenne Valley's fire district, and LegoLab's fire district.
The two departments have a combined force of 45 (10 Firefighter/Paramedics, 12 Firefighter/EMTs, 9 Firefighters, 4 EMTs and 3 Paramedics) and 8 cadets.
